A simple, supportive process for families and coordinators

Getting started should feel clear and manageable

We understand that finding the right support can feel overwhelming.

Families often come to us unsure of where to begin. Support coordinators are balancing multiple cases and need a provider who is responsive, organized, and easy to work with.

At AJ Residence, we make the process simple, clear, and supportive from the very first conversation.

Whether you are seeking residential services, day support, community-based services, or support for a child, our team will guide you step by step.

You are not doing this alone. We walk with you through the process.

How to Begin Services

1

Contact us or submit a referral

Families may contact us directly, or support coordinators may submit a referral through the Virginia Waiver Management System (WaMS).

We respond promptly and begin reviewing the request as soon as it is received.

Referrals are accepted for:

  • Residential Group Homes
  • Adult Center-Based Day Support
  • Community Engagement
  • Community Coaching
  • Children's Program & Youth Enrichment
2

We take time to understand your needs

Once we receive your referral or inquiry, we gather information to understand the individual as a whole person, not just a set of documents.

This may include:

  • Individual Support Plan (ISP)
  • Medical or behavioral information (if applicable)
  • Safety considerations
  • Daily support needs
  • Family preferences and goals

We take the time to listen carefully so we can determine whether our program is the right fit.

3

Schedule a visit or intake meeting

We invite families and support coordinators to meet with us.

Depending on the service, this may include:

  • A tour of the group home
  • A visit to the day support center
  • A conversation about routines, preferences, and goals

This meeting is calm, respectful, and focused on making sure the individual feels comfortable and understood.

4

Review and acceptance

After the meeting, we review all information to ensure:

  • We can safely support the individual
  • The environment is appropriate
  • Staffing is available
  • The service aligns with the ISP

Once approved, we confirm next steps and a projected start date.

5

Begin services with a thoughtful transition

We work closely with families and coordinators to ensure a smooth start.

The first days are structured but gentle. We introduce routines gradually so the individual can settle in comfortably.

Our goal is to create a positive and stable beginning.

What Support Coordinators Can Expect

We value our partnership with support coordinators and case managers.

You can expect:

Prompt and clear communication
Timely follow-up

We aim to make your job easier while ensuring the individual receives the right support.
